Electronics & Software Engineer

Responsibilities and Duties

The Electronics & Software Engineer will work with the engineering team on the specification, design, build and test of control and instrumentation for test rigs. They will also create prototypes of components and operate the rigs to validate system performance. The engineer’s responsibilities will include: 

  • Design schematics and prototype PCB layouts 
  • Manage the supply chain for PCBs and other components 
  • Integrate embedded systems with hardware and power electronics. 
  • Design, develop, and implement embedded firmware for microcontrollers to control and monitor energy storage systems. 
  • Program microcontrollers primarily in C and C++. 
  • Develop Windows-based applications using C# for system monitoring and control 
  • Conduct hands-on testing, debugging, and validation of embedded systems in a laboratory setting. 
  • Write short reports and present work to others 

 

This job will include a large proportion of hands-on work, for example assembly of prototype PCBs. As is often the case in small companies, roles and responsibilities can be fluid, and the Electronics & Software Engineer may be asked to take on other tasks as well. 

Qualifications and Skills:
The ideal candidate will have a degree or equivalent background in Electronic Engineering, with industrial experience – both practical and analytical. We are looking for a motivated, independent individual. Relevant experience includes some or all of the following: 

  • Hands-on soldering, wiring and laboratory skills 
  • Experience with schematic & PCB design software (KiCad preferred). 
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities 
  • Working knowledge of version control systems (Git). 
  • Proven proficiency in programming microcontrollers using C and preferably C++. 
  • Familiarity with C# for Windows application development 
  • Use of DAQ & instrumentation.

Workshop Technician

Responsibilities and Duties:

SynchroStor use a number of test rigs used to validate designs. These test rigs often require assembly/disassembly where the workshop technician would take a lead role under the supervision of the design engineers. Many of these test rigs include hydraulic power packs and electromechanical assemblies. There is a creative atmosphere and a busy research lab where all of our ideas are developed and tested. We are also building a grid-scale demonstration unit of our energy storage system at our site just outside Edinburgh.

We are looking for a multiskilled mechanical technician to work on a wide range of these test rigs.

As is often the case in small companies, roles and responsibilities can be fluid, and the technician may be asked to take on other tasks. We value individuals who are willing to learn new skills and grow in their careers. Training will be provided where required.

Qualifications and Skills:

SynchroStor is looking for a versatile, motivated, independent candidate with experience.  Relevant competencies include some or all of the following and

  • Work experience in a similar role.
  • Knowledge of mechanical workshop drawings and able to interpret these for parts inspection and assembly.
  • Experience of general workshop appliances e.g. sheet metal fabrication and hand tools.
  • Experience of maintenance and fault finding of equipment. Experience with assembly and maintenance of hydraulic machines would be advantageous.
  • Qualifications for operating telehandler/forklift/cherry picker or similar
  • Good understanding of health & safety in the workplace
  • Able to work effectively as an individual and as a member of a team.
  • Some manual handling will be involved requiring fitness and physical effort.
